For a home-based owner who does not want a personal address on the public record, Northwest Registered Agent is the stronger match: its registered agent service costs 125 USD per year (as of 2026-10-06) and includes a business address, mail scanning and a phone line. ZenBusiness is the better fit for someone who is forming the business anyway and wants formation, EIN and registered agent from one provider, at 199 USD per year. Either way, a commercial agent's address replaces the owner's on the agent record.

Which registered agent service is better for a home-based owner who wants privacy?

On the published evidence, Northwest Registered Agent. The privacy case rests on one fact of record: in California, the Secretary of State describes its Business Search as containing the most current filings of record, including the name and address of the agent for service of process. An owner who names themselves as agent puts a home address in a searchable public database.

A commercial agent lists its own address instead. Northwest's published fee includes a business address, and it is the lower of the two prices. ZenBusiness is a legitimate choice when the deciding factor is something other than the lowest price or the privacy features, as the sections below explain.

Does a small business have to name a registered agent?

Registered agent law is state law and it differs. This page covers only the rules checked at the official source. For any other state, the rule varies and the state's filing office is the place to confirm it.

The California Secretary of State says corporations, limited liability companies, limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships are required by statute to designate an agent for service of process. Its Service of Process page also states that a California entity cannot act as its own agent. The Business Entities FAQs carry the same designation requirement.

Texas takes a similar position. According to the Texas Secretary of State's Registered Agent FAQs, an entity may not serve as its own registered agent. An officer, owner or employee may serve in an individual capacity, but for a home-based owner that means the home address becomes the agent address.

What happens if the agent is not maintained?

Texas attaches consequences to failing to maintain a registered agent. According to the Texas Secretary of State, it may result in involuntary termination of a domestic entity, or revocation of a foreign entity's registration. That is the practical reason to treat the agent as a standing obligation.

No state rule on how quickly an agent must pass documents on is covered here, and neither provider's own claims about speed are repeated.

How do ZenBusiness and Northwest compare?

The two providers are listed alphabetically below, and the order is not a ranking. All prices were checked on the providers' own pages and are dated 2026-10-06.

Northwest Registered Agent: Registered agent service is 125 USD per year, including a free domain, website, business address, phone line and mail scanning. Its proposition is privacy. For a home-based owner whose main goal is keeping a personal address off the record, it deserves the serious hearing, and it is the better answer on this page's question.

ZenBusiness: Registered agent service is 199 USD per year, sold as an add-on across its formation packages. Formation packages are Starter at 0 USD plus state fees, Pro at 199 USD and Premium at 299 USD. Pro and Premium renew at their annual prices, and the EIN and operating agreement are included from Pro up and cost 99 USD each on Starter. Other listed products include Money Pro at 30 USD per month and a website at 129 USD per year.

Free-first-year offers move and carry conditions, so the current introductory terms should be checked on the ZenBusiness page. The figure to plan around is the 199 USD renewal. Where a formation price is quoted "plus state fees," the state fee is set by the state, is not the provider's price, and varies.

"Not published here" means this page does not cover it. It does not mean the provider offers nothing. It means a home-based owner should ask before assuming.

When does ZenBusiness make sense instead of Northwest?

A business being formed now has a sequence of jobs: the entity, the EIN, a separate business account, and then books. The registered agent sits inside the first step, because the filing needs an agent named at the outset. Buying the agent from the company that files the entity means one vendor and one renewal to track.

ZenBusiness covers formation, EIN, operating agreement and registered agent. Customers who form with it can also get a free accounting consultation through ZenBusiness, which covers the step after the entity exists. The U.S. Small Business Administration's Register Your Business guide is a general starting point for the state-level steps in setting up a new business.

That is a bundling argument, not a privacy argument. If keeping the home address off the record is the only priority, Northwest costs 74 USD less per year and lists the business address as an included feature. If one provider matters more, ZenBusiness is the stronger fit, with the address arrangement confirmed before buying.

Which option suits which home-based owner?

  • Keeping a home address off the public record at the lowest published price: Northwest Registered Agent.
  • Forming a new entity and wanting one provider for formation, EIN and agent: ZenBusiness, with address and mail arrangements confirmed.

An owner who later changes agent in Texas pays 15 USD to change the registered agent or registered office, using Form 401, and the Form 401 instructions on the Texas Secretary of State site set out the process. Any provider fees for switching are separate and are not covered here. Other providers, including Bizee, CSC, Harbor Compliance, LegalZoom, Rocket Lawyer and Tailor Brands, are outside this two-way comparison.

What should be checked before choosing?

Confirm in writing which address the provider will list on the state filing, and whether that address is a street address where papers can actually be received. Confirm the renewal price rather than any first-year price, because promotional and renewal rates can differ. Check with the state's filing office whether any other document on file, beyond the agent record, publishes an owner's address, since that varies by state.
